6 Ways To Keep Happy

I've been a bit up and down emotionally recently. I guess it's to be expected considering what's happened over the last few months. When I'm feeling like this I have to make a really conscious effort to pick myself up emotionally because I know how quickly things can spiral out of control if I'm feeling down.

The landscape in which I live my life has completely changed and with it, so have my daily rituals. I'm a creature of habit so having my schedule switched up like this has certainly been a challenge. But I guess with every challenge comes an opportunity; I've been using this change in my life to think up new ways to occupy myself and keep me feeling happy. I wanted to share a few of the things I've been doing recently to keep the sad feelings at bay and to remind me that things are definitely not as bad as the seem.

I believe that there are two things in life you should never have to chase; true friendship and true love. Being recently single has definitely opened my eyes to the true value of friendship; you'd be amazed at the people who float away when they realise that you no longer fit into their "couples" life. I'm incredibly lucky that I have such a supportive group of friends around me, and spending time with them has really helped me feel happy. The majority of my friends are in long term relationships but it certainly doesn't stop us from spending time together. I am getting used to being a regular 3rd wheel and I'm actually starting to quite enjoy it!

There's a lot of spare time kicking around in my life at the moment and I've been trying to work out the best way in which I can use it to my advantage. When the busy days are out weighed by the days when there's nothing in the diary it's important to have a plan. If I know I've got nothing on over a weekend or during a week day evening I make sure I block book my time out with things to do, like evening runs, blog writing and pamper sessions. I've amazed myself with how much I've been able to get done recently and during my low times, this sense of achievement really helps perk me up.

I'm the kind of person who loves to have something to look forward to. I find that when I'm feeling down, just knowing something fun is around the corner can be the difference between me wanting to get up in the morning and me hiding under the covers for an extra few hours. I've made a ridiculous amount of plans this year; Goodwood Festival of Speed, V Festival, Wildlife Festival, a holiday in May with my cousin, another holiday in July with my girl friends, a concert in June, another concert in September; the list goes on. I've made sure I've got something planned for each month so I know that if things start to get me down, it's only a matter of weeks until I'll be cheered up again.

Work can mean different things to different people. I'm the kind of person who takes pride in my work so whilst I was having a particularly shitty week last week I got my head down and engrossed myself in my job. I created a few bits of documentation that I was particularly proud of and I took on a challenge that I know will keep me occupied for weeks to come. Sometimes a distraction, no matter how small, can really make a world of difference, especially if it means taking a break from dwelling on whatever it is that's making you feel down in the first place.

Creativity for me used to be painting and drawing, but as time has gone on I find myself doing less art work and more writing. Having a blog certainly helps me with my creative outlet, and my love for photography and editing keeps me feeling artistic even though I'm no longer painting. Creativity doesn't have to be something that you physically make; you could spend some time re designing the layout of your house/ flat/ bedroom. You could bake, go through your wardrobe and look at creating some new outfit looks. The list really is endless.

Eeeek things just got deep. It wouldn't be a Sophy Victoria blog post if I didn't stray a little from the light hearted chat about pampering yourself and clearing out your wardrobe, right?

I want to refer back to what I said earlier about there being two things in life that you should never have to chase; true friendship and true love. I covered friendship in the first paragraph but I'd like to speak briefly about that little L word. Being single has meant I've been thrown into the single pool along with the other Tinder and Bumble goers. Knowing my worth was never really an issue before when I had someone to validate it for me, but since I've been single it's been something I've definitely struggled with. I sort of feel like there's this unwritten rule that says at 28, I should have kids or at least a ring on my finger. It's taken me a few months to realise it but I'm not ashamed to say that I think I'm actually pretty great. I'm a good friend and I'd make an awesome girlfriend (guy readers, take note). Knowing this has made me feel empowered and a little more picky about who I chose to spend my evenings messaging. I might be 28 and single, but that doesn't mean I'm going to be settling for 2nd best.
